Safety Glazing Certification to Meet Code & Build Trust

Keystone Certifications and SGCC are separate, competing certification bodies. Both are accredited by ANAB and SCC. Keystone Certifications provides safety glazing certification to ANSI Z97.1, CPSC 16 CFR 1201, and CAN/CGSB 12.1.

Safety glazing certification verifies that glass used in human-impact locations meets required impact-safety standards. It applies to tempered glass, laminated glass, shower enclosures, guard rails, wired glass, and other glazing products used in buildings—helping reduce the risk of serious injury if breakage occurs.

Safety glazing certification is important for:

Testing for safety glazing certification is required annually. Keystone Certifications provides a Getting Started Checklist to guide manufacturers through the testing and certification process.

All certified products are listed in Keystone’s Certified Product Directory, which is searchable by manufacturer and product type.

The safety glazing certification process includes:

1. Executing a License Agreement with Keystone Certifications
2. Submitting a product application through the Client Portal
3. Testing at a Keystone-recognized laboratory
4. Submitting a Quality Manual
5. Certification issuance and authorization to label
6. Completing an in-plant inspection within six months

Certified safety glazing products must be permanently labeled. Labels (sandblasted, laser-etched, or acid-etched) must include:

• Glass type
• Product owner’s name
• Safety glazing standard
• Test size classification
• Drop height class
• Nominal thickness
• Date of manufacture
• Certification Body Mark (for Keystone: KCI SfG-____-__)

Manufacturing facilities are inspected annually as part of ongoing safety glazing certification. Inspections are scheduled at least 30 days in advance, and a Pre-Inspection Preparation Checklist is provided.

Common failure reasons include:

• Inadequate tempering
• Laminated glass losing integrity after impact
• Materials not meeting required impact categories
• Poor edge quality
• Manufacturing defects such as bubbles or internal flaws
